Letter charges that ?Aristide was not a democratically elected president?.
Aristide’s fall was latest in an international trend to shed leaders who squander their democratic mandates by tampering with elections, intimidating the opposition and tolerating widespread corruption.
Founding board member Amb. Timothy Carney questions whether Aristide was duly elected, citing fraud in 2000 parliamentary elections and boycott.
No one familiar with how Aristide won the election should share the concerns about his forced departure two years before the legal end of his term. It’s a stretch to describe the elections of Nov. 26, 2000 as free and fair.
In the 2000 presidential elections, less than 10% of eligible voters participated. There was more participation in the elections that gave Taylor the presidency of Liberia and whom the USG told last year to step down when civil war reached Monrovia.
Haiti Democracy Project fact sheet shows Aristide was not democratically elected in 2000.
