There were only four women in Haiti’s last parliament of 149. Since then we have launched a campaign to recruit women candidates for the next election. We already have twenty-five, enough to vie for 18 percent of the seats. We want to run at least 139, one for every open seat. So we are short by 114. While we have at times fluctuated up to forty-five candidates or more, with our meager resources we can’t keep them. Our project to run all 139 was ready for submission when the coronavirus hit. Our women have pivoted to health aid and education, advised by a doctor from the State University of Haiti Hospital and a nurse with Médicins sans Frontières.
