As announced, we are going to air special programming today. All radio station members of the National Association of Haitian Media (ANMH) in connection with National Television of Haiti will broadcast a series of programs on the occasion of the funeral of journalist Jacques Roche, which will take place tomorrow.
The radios will broadcast from a hotel in the capital. Journalists from several media outlets will be there to report the event all day. The first program will end at 9:30 a.m. and will resume at 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. This newscast will be presented by different reporters from different media.
A special newscast will be presented this morning. There will also be presentations on the situation of the press and security. We will also use the occasion to pay tribute to Jacques Roche.
It should be remembered that the journalists will hold a march in the capital tomorrow. The march will leave from St. Pierre Church in Petionville and will end in front of the National Palace where journalists will issue a message to the authorities asking them to assume their responsibility in matters regarding security. The march will make a first stop in front of the office of the prime minister.
Concerning the security issue, it should be reminded that, yesterday, Prime Minister Gerard Latortue officially announced the appointment of Mario Andresol as director-general of the national police. Prime Minister Latortue specifies that former police director Leon Charles did not resign but was instead transferred to Washington where he will be in charge of security at the Haitian embassy in Washington.
According to the prime minister, the installation ceremony of the new police director will take place this Friday, July 22. Prime Minister Latortue said a meeting was held at his office yesterday with members of MINUSTAH (U.N. Stabilization Mission in Haiti) in which they expressed satisfaction with Charles as former police director.
We should point out that an incident occurred last night at the Quatre Cercueils intersection when a Haitian National Police patrol was attacked by a group of bandits. The police responded and killed three of the bandits. However, the bandits managed to take a vehicle belonging to the PNH. We hope to have further information from the PNH about this situation.
