Prime Minister Gerard Latortue says a commission that includes members of the government and the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) is working together to try to find a consensus on the electoral law that should be made public next week. According to the head of government, the harmonization of viewpoints on the document should not cause any problem. In addition, the prime minister welcomes the initiative by the African Union to help with the electoral process in Haiti.
Concerning the upcoming elections, the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) is doing everything possible to guarantee the security of the elections this year. Minustah spokesman Damian Cardona is very optimistic about the issue and says that the electoral process has already been launched as far as security is concerned. Cardona said that if the elections fail, it is the international community’s failure too.
