Originally: Haitian bishop suggests USA protecting former prime minister
The vice-president of the Haitian Conference of Bishops has welcomed the news of the arrest of Lavalas activist Annette Auguste. Bishop Guire Poulard said that the arrest proves that the judicial authorities are doing their job impartially. He said that there are other Lavalas officials who should be brought to justice too, because, according to him, Auguste was just a link in the chain of the right-hand men working for former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
“I believe that the judicial authorities are doing their job. I hope that legal actions will also be taken against all the people who were involved in criminal acts.”
Bishop Poulard said Auguste’s arrest is just a link in the chain and that there are other Lavalas officials who should be arrested too. He points to former Lavalas Prime Minister Yvon Neptune.
“Auguste is just a link in the chain. But we know that there are a lot of other criminals. For example, the former prime minister is not innocent at all. Naturally, it pertains to the justice system to prove whether or not he was innocent, but it seems as if he is enjoying the protection of the Americans because he is an American citizen. It is as if the Americans came to Haiti just so they could protect these Lavalas men who were killing the people. Maybe this is the reason why he is still on the loose. It is important for Haiti to have an impartial judicial system. They should stop protecting these men so that order may prevail in the country.”
(Radio Vision:) “Bishop Poulard, the Lavalas members consider the arrest of the Lavalas partisans to be persecution. What is your opinion about that?”
“Why did they not say that about the 5 December and 17 December events? Why did they not say that when they were killing Jean L. Dominique and Brignol Lindor? Why did they not say that when they were breaking up the anti-government demonstrations, when they were striking the people with lashes and throwing all kinds of dirt at them? Were these people not present in the country then? Yes, these people were there. And they were the ones with sophisticated weapons. They were the ones taking the country’s money to pay scoundrels and killers so that they could assassinate the people. Why did they not speak out against all that then?”
