The future of Haiti is important to all Americans, but especially to us in South Florida. These are again tragic, chaotic times for Haiti. Historically, its rulers have left stratagems of failure and deception in this fragile country.

The countries of CARICOM have requested an investigation of the exit of yet another ineffective, mediocre and, possibly, fraudulent leader. Those who care about Haiti have known that a change of leadership was coming and necessary to create a new beginning — not a yesterday, but a tomorrow, as Secretary of State Colin Powell said.

We have a chance to help Haitians lead, for the first time, a renaissance in education, healthcare, commerce, trade, security, communications, agriculture, transportation and tourism. They are self-sufficient and industrious people, but their leadership has always forsaken them.

It is time for that new beginning, with help from their friends.
