The President of Haiti, Jean Bertrand Aristide, has arrived in the Central African Republic, after fleeing the country following an armed uprising.
He said in a statement, read out by the Prime Minister, that he had done so in order to avoid bloodshed.
French, US and Canadian troops have arrived in Haiti as part of an international force sent to restore order.
Violence flared after Mr Aristide fled the country, with some of the widespread looting and destruction apparently in direct response to the president’s ceding of power.
